I fell in love with video games at the age of 13. I will never forget
it. I received the Original Nintendo NES System for Christmas. Yes, that was a looong time ago :)

I would spend afternoons, weekends and during the Summer… days and nights  playing.

I never really gave much thought to becomming a game tester, back then, I didn’t even know that it was a legitamite job.

I just simply enjoyed playing video games.

I have loved playing video games all of these years but it wasn’t until about a year ago that I asked myself..

how do I become a game tester?

I  needed to find another source of income but I wanted to do something that I was going to enjoy. I spent SOOO many years just doing  jobs for the sake of having a job and I didn’t
want to continue that pattern.

I was playing Super Mario Brothers on Wii , Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I am a Mario Chick :) Anyway, I  thought to myself…

“I wish I could get paid to play video games”

Right then, the wheels started spinning in my head and my search started.

I searched the internet for  information on the subject and I found myself a bit overwhelmed.

Don’t get me wrong,

Some sites said that you could do it this way, other sites said that you had to do it that way, It all became a bit much.

Like with any job, make sure that your resume is on point. What do I mean by this?
Make sure that spelling and grammer are perfect and be sure to allow someone to proof read it for you.
Make sure that the person who reads your resume doesn’t just tell you that it looks good because they are your friend.

Make sure you get an honest opinion.

4. WORK ON YOUR KNOCK-OUT COVER

LETTER

You may think that the most important thing when applying for gaming jobs would be your resume..

Wrong!  The most important thing is your cover letter. Make sure that you have an eye catching cover letter.  A unique cover letter will stand out among the thousands of  other resumes that the company receives. You will also let your potential employer
see that you have personality :)

5. DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THE GAMING

COMPANY THAT YOU ARE APPLYING FOR

I think that this one states the obvious. You must know about the company that you want to work for.

Review the company website. You should know the types of  video games that the company makes. You should also be familure with playing the comapany video games. If you don’t want to shell out the money to buy the games, then download demos.

Familiarize yourself with EVERYTHING that you can, not ony the games but also previous and upcomming events of the company.

6. BE PREPARED FOR THE INTERVIEW

Practice the answers that you will give at the interview. Practice answering any questions that
you may be asked about your resume, salary requirements, experience etc. You want to make sure that your answers are solid and most important
you want to sound confident. Confidence Not Cockiness will let your potential employer know that you are taking the job seriously and not as just a fun way to earn money by playing video games.

Remember, this is a REAL JOB!

7.  MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE OPEN FOR

AN INTERVIEW

Make sure that you will be open for an interview 1 – 3 weeks after submitting your resume to a gaming company.

If the gaming company calls you and you are unable to do an interview, they are not going to take your interest for the gamming job seriously. So, after submitting your application, clear your calander.

8. GO TO THE INTERVIEW EARLY

You should arrive at the interview 5 -10 minutes early.Showing up early let’s your potential employer see that you are not only professional but that you are taking  the job seriously.

Make sure that you know where your interview is going to be BEFORE the day of the interview! This way, you won’t get lost trying to find it, run late and ruin your chances of getting your dream game job.

9. GET READY THE NIGHT BEFORE

My mother used to drill in my head the
importance of  getting ready the night before and if for some reason I didn’t, I would almost always run late and forget something.

I guess mom was right. :)

Get ready for the interview the night before so that you won’t run late or forget anything.

Make sure that when you choose what to wear for the interview that you DO NOT wear jeans, a t -shirt or distressed anything! Yes you are applying for a video game job but you should dress casual.

Guys, should wear slacks and a dress shirt or if you are applying for a management position you should wear a suit.

Ladies should wear a nice dress or a skirt and blouse. Lucky for us ladies, we can wear a dress or skirt and blouse for a management position also. A nice suit will work too :)

The most important thing is to dress
the part and look professional.

10. SMILE :)

This is the most important thing that you can do in an interview. No I am not just saying this because I am a female! You should always flash a genuine smile and make eye contact during your interview.

A genuine smile will show your interest in the job and it will show the interviewer that you are not just
applying for a job just to make money but that you are intersted in the company.

Video Game Tester What is it?

A video game tester or game tester is responsible for testing different aspects of video games.

A video game tester playes games to find glitches or problems within the video game. The video game tester then reports all findings to the company that the tester is working for.

A video game tester doesn’t just make sure that the game is interesting. A video game tester must make sure that the music, and graphics are functioning properly.

TYPES OF VIDEO GAME TESTING

The different types of video game testing jobs are static or structured testing and dynamic or unstructured testing.

STATIC OR STRUCTURED TESTING

Static or structured testing is when a test case is written by the video game developers and the tester must follow it. The case usually  has a list of aspects of the game that are to be tested and checked for errors.

EXAMPLES OF STATIC OR STRUCTURED TESTING

  • Checking to make sure that all weapons on the game are

working correctly.

  •  Checking to make sure that you can’t walk through walls

if you are not supposed to.

  • Checking to make sure that the games interface is

working properly.

DYNAMIC OR UNSTRUCTURED TESTING

Dynamic or unstructured testing is testing that is done with no case for the game tester to follow. The game tester simply plays the game as a player normally would and finds errors that way.

 DYNAMIC OR UNSTRUCTURED EXAMPLES

  • Checking to see if the game can be broken
  • Finding glitches
  • Finding shortcuts or secret passages
